Local Agriculture — a Chat With Rob Gay
Rob Gay is both the Area C Director and chair of the Regional District East Kootenay. Rob sits on the board of SIBAC, and through the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Governments helped organize a recent workshop in Creston on agriculture, titled Healthier & Wealthier Through Food.
It was a useful and sometimes thought-provoking day-long event, where participants zeroed in on challenges and opportunities facing regional & local governments and other stakeholders who want to see more resilient, environmentally friendly local and regional food systems emerge in rural BC.
Keynote speaker Kent Mullinex, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Food Systems at Kwantlen Polytechnic University set a sober tone as he described our current massively centralized, environmentally disastrous global food system, controlled by a handful of multinational corporations, then suggested practical ways we might go about creating new, locally-controlled alternatives, systems that provide us with better food, stimulate local economies, support the entry of newcomers into agriculture, and protect our environment.
Rob took a moment at the end of the workshop to chat about the workshop.
