Kaslo InfoNet a Rural Broadband Success Story

Access to high speed internet is emerging as a development must for small rural communities and isolated rural regions struggling to maintain, let alone grow their economies.

Yet for most, big city bandwidth is a pipe dream.

The experience of the small West Kootenay village of Kaslo demonstrates it doesn’t have to be this way. Through a combination of vision, determination, technical smarts, and a bit of luck, Kaslo stands as a real rural bandwidth success story.

This case study introduces the experience of the Kaslo InfoNet Society, a community controlled non-profit Internet Service Provider that, for the last 20 years, has worked to bring internet connectivity to underserved — and unserved — residents, businesses, and NGOs in Kaslo and the isolated, mountainous North Kootenay Lake region that surrounds it.
